Data collection software
Psion Workabout and WorkAbout
Pro
The WORKABOUT
PRO, is available with either Windows Mobile 2003 SE or Windows CE .NET
configurations. This device delivers the performance, ruggedness and durability
required for mobile data collection in harsh environments in a very
user-friendly, ergonomic package. Based on industry standards, our design
ensures ease of integration with your existing or desired infrastructure.
Unparalleled expansion and connectivity options allow the benefits of RFID to be
combined with other data collection technologies such as scanners or imagers. A
high degree of customisation flexibility enables the WORKABOUT PRO to be
perfectly tailored to your application.

The
original Psion Workabout is a portrait style high performance corporate handheld,
incorporating the latest innovations in electronic design, construction and
multi-tasking operating systems. The Workabout shares a common architecture with
the Psion HC and Psion Series 3 range. This commonality in base level design has
ensured that the product has achieved a smooth launch and rapid acceptance in a
very competitive market place since its introduction in 1995.
Exceptional Price
Performance
The
Workabout MX units offer exceptional price performance and have been adopted in a broad
range of applications including Sales Order Entry, Concession Point Of Sale,
Asset Tracking and Warehouse Picking systems.
For those customers
looking to replace or upgrade their existing Psion Organiser II solutions, the
Workabout offers a logical and cost effective upgrade path. For bar code and
data capture applications this transfer has been made even easier with the
availability of QUESTOR, a user definable data capture
solution.
Now the range has been
further expanded to include an integrated bar code pen model, Infra Red serial
interface options and
single-handed
laser scanning units.
Workabout MX
The Workabout MX
replaced the MkI Workabout, and offers a number of enhancements including faster processing speed, 2Mb of on board RAM and a wider range of
interface options including IrDA (infra red serial). For those customers who
still require the MkI versions there may still be some available if required,
please contact out sales desk to enquire on availability.
All Workabout MX
models are based on the same ergonomic design with the integration of
supplementary interfaces to support its use in a variety of application areas.
Other Workabout variants available include models with bar code reading/scanning
capability built onto the main unit - the dedicated bar code versions are
described and listed separately in subsequent sections.
The Workabout MX is
housed in a strong ABS case that provides the unit with the strength to
withstand a 1M drop onto a concrete floor. The standard machines are IP54 rated,
giving them the ability to operate in dusty and wet (splashproof) areas.
Ergonomic Design
The Workabout MX has at
its core a 16-bit industry standard processor supported by Psion's powerful
EPOC-16 multi-tasking operating system. The user can access this power via an
ergonomically designed keyboard providing separate alpha and numeric keys as
well as control keys. The keyboard is divided into three clearly identified
areas: at the top the navigation keys (up down, left, right), in the middle the
numeric keys (allowing single handed entry of numeric data) and then the alpha
keys in ABC format. Certain important keys are highlighted in yellow.
The Workabout MX has a
high resolution backlit graphical display that supports up to a maximum of 39
characters by 12 lines and grey scales. In operation this allows information,
text and graphics, to be displayed clearly to the user in any lighting
conditions. The backlight is under user control with an optional timed
switch-off.
Power is provided by
two alkali AA cells (not included) or the optional rechargeable battery pack.
The batteries are located in a sliding tray that is released from the central
core of the machine which also houses the Lithium back up cell and two Solid
State Disk (SSD) drive bays. The rechargeable battery pack can be recharged in
situ via the Low Insertion Force (LIF) connector on the base of the Workabout
using either a standard Psion mains adaptor with the Workabout holster, or by
connection to the Workabout
cradle.
(Note that ordinary rechargeable AA batteries cannot be charged in-situ). There
is a Lithium battery which supports the internal RAM memory while the main
batteries are being replaced. Both the main batteries and the Lithium battery
can be monitored via the operating system with low battery warnings being
displayed to the user.
Powerful Rechargeable battery
An optional Nickel
Metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack for the Workabout MX increases the capacity of
the standard NiCad from 850 mAh to 1250mAh making it ideal in heavy interface
use applications such as continuous scanning. NiMH packs can only be recharged
using the fast charge facilities of either the docking cradle or the Multi
cradle. It is not possible to recharge using the trickle charge capacity of the
Workabout holster or the VIC/VCOMM units.
In addition to the 2Mb
on board RAM memory, optional Solid State Disks can be added to increase the
capacity by up 4Mb per slot. SSDs can provide both volume storage for look-up
information and a solid, reliable method of data interchange with a PC via a PC
SSD drive.
The base of the
Workabout houses a communication and charging port known as a LIF (Low Insertion
Force) connector. The LIF connector is ideal for many thousand make and break
connections unlike a standard RS232 'D' type connector which is normally only
guaranteed for hundreds. The port provides a proprietary high speed serial
interface which can, when used with the holster, provide connection for charging
and PC communications via the standard PsiWin package.
The Holster can also be used to connect peripherals compatible with the Psion
Series 3/3a range. The LIF port is also used for connection to the Workabout
cradle.
Built in Applications
The
Workabout MX has a number of built-in applications, designed primarily for the
first time user who wants to see how the unit will operate without going to the
expense of having custom software written. These applications are Database,
Lotus 123 compatible Spreadsheet and Calculator. These applications are taken
from the Series 3/3a and operate in a similar fashion. A comprehensive operating
manual covering the hardware aspects, built in applications and command line
shell is included with each Workabout.
Psion's OPL and OVAL
programming languages are built into the machine for those wishing to experiment
with small or trial applications. Serious developers have the option to use the
full 'C'
SDK.
The Workabout MX should
run any program written for the Series 3 without modification. Programs written
for the 3a/3c (or auto sensing 3/3a/3c) will probably require some modification.
The standard Workabout
MX plastic is grey. It is possible to have the unit supplied with a yellow case
to special order.
For large orders it is
sometimes possible to have the Workabout's keyboard modified to accommodate
custom requirements.
The back of the
Workabout MX has attachment points for an elasticated back strap which adds to
the stability of the Workabout when entering data. For additional protection an
external leather case with plastic keyboard / screen membrane is available with
elasticated back strap and neck strap.
There are currently
seven manufactured interface options available that have to be ordered as
Workabout MX machine variants; they cannot be retro fitted at a later date. The
external connections of both interfaces are either on the top or the bottom of
the Workabout MX depending on the model variant.
Workabout MX Laser
Similar in concept
to the Integrated Wand Workabout MX, the Workabout MX Scanner gives integrated
bar code laser scanning capability to the Workabout. Scanning options and
facilities are under application programme control. The unit may be powered via
either standard Alkali batteries or the standard Workabout NiCad batteries. A
Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable battery option is available. The unit has 1Mb
of internal RAM and also features an adjustable angle scanner head to facilitate
use in a wide range of environments and applications. In addition to the LIF
port, a 9-pin D type RS232 port is fitted as standard. A full range of industry
standard bar code symbologies is supported on the unit.
Programmers should note
that commands to configure the Psion Integrated Laser Scanner are different to
those for BCR /Integrated Wand version Workabouts. For general data collection
applications we recommend using our QUESTOR
user configurable data collection software.
